What?

The travel grants are for early-career researchers to travel to international conferences to present their research and the workshop grants are for experienced researchers or administrators to organize a workshop on a topic related to research communication. Future calls for AuthorAID travel and workshop grants will be announced on the website.

Who?

  • A citizen of and living and working in a country on the list of eligible countries. Exceptions are made for refugee academics, so please make this clear on your application.
  • You should not have received a grant from AuthorAID in the past two years.
  • You should be a first-time presenter

What is required?

What?

Nurturing and maintaining strong relations with the academic community is a top priority at Google. The Google Africa PhD Fellowship Program has been created to support and recognize outstanding students pursuing or looking to pursue PhD level studies in computer science and related areas. The Google Africa PhD Fellowship program for 2018 is now open for application until 11:59pm GMT on Friday 19th January 2018. Who?

  • Applicants must be enrolled into a full-time PhD program at a university in Africa. Applicants who are currently in their first year of a part-time PhD program and transferring to full-time positions are also welcome to apply.
  • Students should be early stage PhD students, i.e., should not have been into more than 1 year of their PhD. Applicants for the 2018 Fellowship must have started their program on or after 1 January 2017.
  • Students must remain enrolled in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
  • Applicants must be pursuing a PhD in Computer Science or related areas.
  • Google employees and family members of Google employees are not eligible.
  • Students who are already receiving another corporate fellowship are not eligible. Grant of the fellowship to this category of applicants is contingent on them joining a full-time PhD program at a university in Africa within the calendar year of the award.
  • For current Undergraduate/Masters students and Professionals
  • Student applicants must be current full-time Undergraduate or Masters Students enrolled at an African university. Professionals must be employed/affiliated with an organization registered in Africa.
  • The Google Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for the full-time PhD program of an African university, in Computer Science or related areas, within the calendar year 2018, or the award shall be forfeited.
  • Grant of the Google Fellowship does not mean admission to the PhD program of a university. The awardee must also complete the PhD admission process of the respective institute/university where he/she wishes to register for a PhD.
  • Grant of the Google Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institute/university where the awardee registers for the PhD program.
  • Google employees and family members of Google employees are not eligible.
  • Applicants who are already receiving another corporate fellowship are not eligible.

What is required?

  • Gather the following documents:
  1. Applicant’s resume with links to publications (if available).
  2. One-page resume of the student’s PhD program advisor.
  3. Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from first year/semester of Bachelor’s degree to date.
  4. Research proposal (maximum two pages).
  5. Three letters of recommendation from those familiar with the applicant’s work (at least one coming from the thesis adviser in case of current PhD students). If the recommendation writers want to send the letter separately, they can mail it directly to research-africa@google.com with the subject “Recommendation for [applicant-name]”.

General notes

  • Applications are accepted directly from students. There is no limit to the number of students who may apply from each university.
  • Applicant’s areas of research interest must be one of the areas listed at https://research.google.com/.
  • Awardees will be announced on the Google Research blog by mid-March 2018

Benefits?

  • Successful students receive named Fellowships, which include a $10,000 award per year over 3 years.
  • The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate.
  • The funds are given as an unrestricted gift, and it is Google’s policy not to pay for overhead on unrestricted gifts.
  • In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor who we hope will become a valuable resource to the student.
  • There is no employee relationship between the student and Google as a result of receiving the fellowship.
  • Fellowship recipients are not subject to intellectual property restrictions unless they complete an internship at Google.
  • Fellowship recipients serving an internship are subject to the same intellectual property and other contractual obligations as any other Google intern.

What?

The Labour Market department’s research interests relate to both the supply (Intrahousehold allocation and specific groups such as migrants and cross-border workers) and demand (firm organisational practices) sides of the labour market. Also the ways supply and demand interact and are affected by public interventions are studied through the lenses of labour relations and through policy evaluation techniques. The department is multidisciplinary and makes use of theoretical and experimental, quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

The department Living Conditions studies the multiple dimensions of the lives of individuals and families, from early childhood to old age, through education, fertility and family formation, employment and retirement. Quantitative, typically survey-based research, examines household income, inequality, poverty, and social inclusion in an international perspective and evaluation of the impact of educational policy, family policy, health policy and social policy in general on living conditions is an integral part of the research agenda.

Spatial, economic and social dimensions of urbanization, interactions between daily and residential mobility, cross-border cooperation and integration, and land market, residential real estate prices and housing policy are the main topics addressed by the Urban Development and Mobility department.

LISER also hosts a data management unit and collects a wide range of survey data on households and individuals. LISER is collecting the national components of the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions, the Survey on Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe, and the Household Finance and Consumption Survey, exploitation of which is strongly encouraged for cross-national, comparative research.

Our institute is searching talented candidates who are able to develop autonomously and in cooperation with other members and groups of the institute a promising research agenda in one of our three research departments:               

While we will consider applications relevant to all thematic areas of LISER, we are particularly interested this year in appointing post-doc research fellows in the domains of (ia) personnel and behavioural economics and (ib) labour economics, (ii) social protection and the welfare state, and in (iii) health and digital geographies. We will also consider applications related to the development of LISER’s research infrastructure and more specifically related to big data.

The position in personnel and behavioural economics (PDR-19-1a) will contribute to the reinforcement of the Labour Market department on the microeconomic analysis of organisations and employer-employee relationships, using survey data, lab and/or field experiments. Research experience on digitization  and on workforce diversity is an asset.

The position in labour economics (PDR-19-1b) is expected to contribute to the department’s research on the impact of public policies on the labour market, and more specifically on the microeconomic analysis of regional and international labour mobility. The ideal candidate has a solid background in economic theory and is able to build the bridge between theory and empirical analyses.

The position in social protection and the welfare state (PDR-19-2) is meant to strengthen the capacity of the Living Conditions department in evaluating the effect of public policies on social welfare and socio-economic inequality and in anticipating the challenges the welfare state will be confronted to in the context of a changing society. In particular, the candidate should be able to develop a research agenda on the evaluation of social security programs or to address topics on the future of social protection in the context of technological transformation (automation, robotisation, digitisation) and population change (migration).

The position within Urban Development and Mobility department is intended to strengthen the expertise of the team in urban/environmental health (PDR-19-3). One of the major challenges of metropolitan areas is to stimulate the development of healthy urban environments and use of new technologies, which allow people to live healthier, longer lives. The candidate should have experience in intervention studies and/or e-health. Another important challenge is the digital transformation of society and its consequences; for this topic, we are looking for a candidate studying the spatial dimensions of these transformations and/or smart cities.

 

Qualifications / What is required?

Applicants should possess an outstanding Master and PhD in economics, social or health sciences with a focus on labour market, social policy, economic geography, urban geography or health. The positions also require affinity with policy related questions and except for the UDM position profound knowledge in micro-econometric modelling. It is expected that the candidates engage in external project funding at national and international science foundations. We also expect excellent written and spoken proficiency in English (one additional foreign language like French or German is highly appreciated).

‘Mekelle University- The most research effective organization in Ethiopia’ Clarivate Analytics

A new analysis by Clarivate Analytics, based on the Web of science research database,  published in a report titled “Scientific Research in East Africa: Key Trends and Observation”has indicated that Mekelle University is the most research effective organization in Ethiopia. This is despite the fact that Mekelle University still lags behind Addis Ababa, Jimma and Gonder Universities in terms of the number of publications.Mu1

However, Mekelle University’s research papers are by far the most cited ones, with a big gap in the citation metrics between Mekelle University and the next most cited University. This indicates that, while Mekelle University still has to do more to increasing the publication output, the publications that are being produced by its researchers are inspiring more other research, or are of high standard and may be controversial, as is reflected in the higher instant of citation.Mu2

This is most probably  a result of the long time international research collaboration that Mekelle University is known for. As publications are produced by researchers from diverse and multi-national institutions, through collaborative international projects such as MU-IUC, NoRAD etc,  they will have better readability and influence thereby, increasing their chances of being cited. Moreover, international collaboration enabled Mekelle University’s researchers to tap in to international laboratory and other resources, resulting in a better quality research than those that would be done only by local researchers. I also believe that through its recent endeavors to improve the quality of publications, Mekelle University was able to make its researchers favor internationally recognized and thus better read journals, thereby contributing to the improved citation metrics.

Higher readability and citation does not, however, show all sides of research productivity. Unless high quality research is produced in larger amounts, and that published technologies are implemented and used in positively influencing real lives, productivity may still be limited. This implies that Mekelle University needs to increase its research output, while maintaining the laudable level of quality of the research that is being undertaken. Moreoever, Mekelle University, as a matter of fact, all other universities,  need to develop their own way of measurements and indices that evaluate how their researches are impacting actual lives.  To do this Mekelle University needs to work harder and better in the following areas

  1. Increase the number of international research collaborations
  2. Improve the status and conditions of research laboratories and other facilities
  3. Undertake tailored capacity building trainings targeting the improvement of publication and numbers
  4. Creating incentives and obligations for increased high quality research and publications through higher standard requirements for promotion and other merits
  5. Developing and recording new ways of measuring actual impact of research in the lives of actual communities

Tailored Opportunities: ASPB (American Society of Plant Biologists) 2018 Travel Grants Award Application

What?

ASPB (American Society of Plant Biologists) is offering a limited number of $575 travel grants to attend Plant Biology 2018, which will be held this year in Montréal, Canada from July 14-18, 2018. This program aims to increase attendance of early career scientists at the annual meeting by providing travel funds for those in financial need. Increasing diversity among Plant Biology attendees is another primary goal. Undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and professionals beginning their careers in plant science are strongly encouraged to apply. US Residency is not a requirement to apply.

How to apply?

Applications must be submitted electronically (online). Letters of recommendation can be uploaded directly to the application by the advisor and professional mentor via a link they will receive once the application is saved and finalized. Alternatively, a letter of recommendation can be sent to slee@aspb.org. Submission deadline for the application and both letters is Wednesday, December 6, 2017 (11:59 p.m. EDT). Please request letters of recommendation with sufficient time so the writers can honor this firm deadline. The system will automatically send a request for a letter only once the applicant selects finalize on the application.

To have your work considered for presentation during a concurrent symposium at Plant Biology 2018, you must submit your abstract through the regular meeting abstract system by February 19, 2018.

Travel grant selection criteria will be based (in this order) on:

  • the science and the quality of the abstract
  • the statement about how attending the meeting will have an impact on the applicant’s career
  • the strength of the two letters of recommendation (see above for letter instructions to postdocs, faculty and professionals)
  • ethnic diversity

Applicants who are selected to receive a grant will be notified by email by Monday, January 22, 2018. Non-recipients will be notified shortly thereafter.

What?

Organizing committee want to develop a more articulated analysis between discussions on sustainability – the on-going, problematic and highly uneven processes of extractivism, environmental change, migration, and social differentiation – and their consequences for social, environmental, and ecological justice.

Organizing committee also invite discussions on how alternatives are worked out in different contexts, networks and coalitions. For instance, what role do reporting mechanisms, indicators and measuring systems play in the politics of sustainability – whether linked to poverty, gender, or climate and environment?

The conference will serve as a platform to share research findings and experiences as well as to develop new ideas, strategies and tools for re-connecting and rebuilding our societies and re-defining the meanings and practices of “sustainability”. We invite proposals for sessions and workshops that examine broader global phenomena and driving forces, as well as on-the-ground realities of those who are most often and most severely impacted and subordinated, or indeed empowered, by resource flow dynamics.

Who?

Organizing committee welcome development scholars from a plurality of disciplines and critical theories (including feminist, indigenous, and political ecology approaches) as well as practitioners from a broad range of professional backgrounds to explore ways to engage in progressive politics of building bridges between actors, movements and societies at multiple levels and across global-local binaries.

Organizing committee also accept papers/presentations outside of the listed sessions, so if you have a paper/presentation to propose that does not necessarily fit into any of the listed sessions but that you feel is relevant to the conference nonetheless, then please send the above information to the conference organisers at the email address: FSDR2018@gmail.com

Forbio Project: Sustainable, climate-neutral and resource-efficient forest-based bioeconomy.

  • Support characterization of value chains of new wood-based products in the EU and their implications on industry structure and sustainability
  • Facilitate planning and implementing a backcasting study on preferable future development of Finnish forest-based bioeconomy

Tech4Effect Project:  Knowledge and Technologies for Effective wood procurement

  • Build forest operation value chains in ToSIA tool (Tool for Sustainable Impact Assessment) according to instructions
  • Collect data on economic, environmental and social indicators, and on wood material flows

Qualifications of the candidate?

  • MSc in forest sciences or related discipline, preferably with a focus on economics and markets, and/or forest value chains and impact assessments.
  • Enthusiasm and capacity to learn new skills and gather information around research topics of bioeconomy, value chains, traditional and new wood-based material flows are a prerequisite.
  • Demonstrable interest in science-policy-practice interaction related to forest-based (circular) bioeconomy, cascade use and all pillars of sustainability.
  • Knowledge and understanding of forest-based industry structure and wood product markets are benefitial.
  • Knowledge on available decision support tools that can guide forest value decision making and scenario assessment is an asset, interest in collecting experiences through surveys on how such tools are used in practice.
  • Plans for/or ongoing PhD studies related to the topic of bioeconomy and (new) wood based value chains is supported by EFI.
  • Prior experience of ToSIA is a strong asset.
  • International experience, e.g demonstrated by internships, studies abroad and/or international courses, international work experience is a plus.
  • Interest to generate both new research findings and recommendations for decision makers in practice.
  • Experience in science communication or peer-reviewed publication is beneficial.
  • Excellent spoken and written skills in English are essential. Knowledge of Finnish is an advantage.

The employee will be an EFI staff member. A fixed term appointment of one year with the possibility for an extension. The position can start from 1st January 2018.

What?

The scholarship allows researchers to spend up to 6 months at the institute developing new projects in collaboration with Beijer researchers.  The institute is based at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden and has a small staff of researchers who work on a variety of ecological-economics issues. The Beijer Institute’s major objectives are to carry out research and stimulate cooperation to promote a deeper understanding of the interplay between ecological systems and social and economic development.

Who?

We welcome candidates who can collaborate on research relevant to at least one of the Institute’s in-house researchers and that can be applied to their home country. Methods and topics of interest include for example: quasi experimental research designs to study causal impacts of policies or economic activities on the environment; and experimental approaches to study human behavior in relation to environmental change or use of natural resources.

It is intended for early-career researchers in environmental economics from developing regions of the world who already have a PhD or are currently enrolled in a PhD program and will finish within 1-2 years.  Preference is given to researchers affiliated with four regional environmental economics networks—CEEPA, EEPSEA, LACEEP, and SANDEE—and the EfD centers.

How to apply

The Scholarship is primarily intended for researchers from the Regional Networks in Environmental Economics, CEEPA, EEPSEA, LACEEP, SANDEE, who have already successfully completed a network-funded project or who are in the process of developing a paper from their project.

Tailored opportunities-call for concept notes for sustainable bioinnovations towards value addition and agro/bioprocessing for smallholder farmers and communities in eastern Africa

What?

The Bioresources Innovations Network for Eastern Africa Development (BioInnovate Africa) Programme is a regional initiative established in 2010 with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). It assists countries in eastern Africa to benefit from the revolutionary advances in biosciences, by converting biobased research ideas and technologies into innovations that improve people’s lives. The Programme is based at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Nairobi, Kenya, and operates in six eastern African countries, namely Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

This call includes three catagories namely: Category 1 – developing and piloting economically viable and innovative biobased technologies and products; Category 2 – incubating biobased technology business; and Category 3 – developing innovation-driven bioeconomy strategy. The tematic foucses areas also include: (a) Value addition to agroproduce; (b) agro/biowaste conversion; (c) bioinnovation policy analysis and development.

Grant amount per project will be given as follows: US$ 750,000 for Category 1; US$ 250,000 for Category 2; and US$ 500,000 for Category 3

Who?

Scientists, researchers, innovators or entrepreneurs resident in the eastern African countries of Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda and who are not current recipients of a BioInnovate Africa project grant.

How?

This is a team based application. At the project level, the team should endeavour to ensure fair and equitable participation of men and women in project activities.
7.0 Matching fund support
The team must demonstrate that their host organisations support the proposed project, and are willing and committed to providing matching funds. These matching funds may be from social impact investors, relevant government organisations or from the private sector and donors. The mode of matching funds may be based on either provision of actual funds and or in-kind contribution of staff, infrastructure and other organisational support, and should be 25% over and above the total grant budget requested from BioInnovate Africa. A clear mechanism for matching funds is important.
