Tailored opportunities: PhD student in Forest Ecology and Modeling at the University of Regensburg, German


The goal of the PhD project is to better understand and predict demographic processes (growth, mortality, recruitment) in temperate forests. To that end, you will apply statistical and simulation models, and calibrate these models using Bayesian methods and large forest datasets. The position is l cated in the junior research group BayForDemo funded by t he Bavarian network for climate research Bayklif.



  • a university degree that qualifies for a PhD program in Regensburg (MSc or equivalent)
  • either a background in ecology or a related discipline, and an interest in statistical and computational methods; or a background in statistics, mathematics or physics, and an interest to apply quantitative methods in an ecological context
  • good knowledge of statistics and R, ideally also in a general programming language (e.g.C++/Python)
  • experience with handling large data volumes
  • demonstrated ability to independently develop scientific theory
  • team orientation and motivation to advance ecological theory about forest demography
  • excellent knowledge of English and writing skills
