The PhD project will involve extensive laboratory work with the use of stable isotope mass spectrometry methods (IRMS, GC-IRMS) to determine reaction-specific isotope fractionation during oxygen consumption experiments, which will be used to improve mechanistic understanding of the magnitude and variability of oxygen stable isotope fractionation and evaluate the potential of oxygen isotope analysis as a tool to study redox reactions of natural or anthropogenic organic compounds.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a master’s degree in environmental sciences, geosciences, chemistry, biology, or a related discipline. Candidates are expected to have a solid background and interest in environmental chemistry, isotope geochemistry, and pollutant dynamics. Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and good communication skills including fluency in English are essential.
