Furthering research on energy metabolism to better understand the basis of the efficiency (and inefficiencies) of feed utilization in cattle strongly relies on the understanding of the service metabolic functions. The cardiovascular system plays a key role on this scenario, besides being a metabolic system of simple understanding by the general public and industry stakeholders. Similarly, extensive analysis of blood analytes and feeding patterns can be used to enhance these associations. We have provided evidence of potential uses of cardiac parameters and associated measures as indicators of major components of the energetic budget of an animal, including feed efficiency, health and reproduction traits. Therefore, this PhD position will be dedicated to advance the fundamental knowledge of these relationships, plus contribute to the application of these assessments in commercial herds as related to precision agriculture. The PhD student will also have the opportunity to work with -omics and classical biochemistry data to better understand the metabolic pathways related to feed efficiency and other phenotypes. The project has three components: (1) evaluate the relationships of heart function and structure with fertility related traits in young bulls, (2) evaluate the relationships of metabolomics data with hormones and metabolites during the circadian cycle, and (3) propose a practical model to evaluate complex traits via biomarkers evaluated to be used as part of the routine in the cattle industry.
The applicant should have obtained a master’s degree by January of 2020 at the latest in the area of Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Biology, Physiology, or related areas. A strong interest in applied Physiology is required and experience in both empirical research and multidisciplinary studies are preferred.
