Tailored opportunities: Postdoctoral researcher position in analytical chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Uppsala University, Sweden, is looking for a post-doctoral researcher in Analytical Chemistry, temporary position for two years.

The postdoctoral candidate will study how frequent and to which extent cellular heterogeneity exists, and other aspects of cell-to-cell signaling, such as their release of neuropeptides and peptide hormones. This will be done through method development where peptide release can be studied online from living cells with mass spectrometry and through single-cell profiling of chemical content.  We will also develop methods for studies of molecular interactions between neuropeptides and their cognate receptors. The project is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research and will over time provide information that is key for future drug design of biological therapeutics.

Duties: Advanced research with emphasis on biological mass spectrometry, in particular through single-cell studies of neuropeptides and characterization of ligand–receptor interactions. The project will consider peptidergic cells from several model systems to study cellular heterogeneity with quantitative and qualitative analysis. An important part of the project considers work with cellular overexpression of membrane proteins such as G-protein coupled receptors and ion channels, to improve our understanding of their structure–function relationships. The project will rely upon MALDI- and high-resolution ESI MS, liquid chromatography and hydrogen–deuterium exchange.

To be eligible to apply you must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, physics or medicine or an exam, which is judged comparable to a Swedish Ph.D. that was completed within three years of the application deadline. If you received your PhD earlier but special circumstances, prolonged periods of illness, parental leave, military service, union duties and others of similar character, exist you are also eligible to apply.

The applicant needs to have a strong motivation for the research project and to be able to contribute to creative ideas. This project requires that the applicant is able to work independently, but that he or she also has excellent collaborative skills, as the project will occasionally require that he or she is able to collaborate with scientists from other research groups and/or universities. The applicant also needs good language skills in English in order to be able to interact, write and publish internationally.

Deadline for application is 4 March 2018
